Create . Inspire . Live Well

You've Been Going To Church For Years – But Are You Growing?

Surely, it cannot be simply to attend a place of fellowship year after year, hear sermon after sermon, and remain exactly where we have always been.

Scripture teaches us that we come together to encourage one another, sharpen one another, be edified, and be equipped, and what we receive should eventually become evident in how we live.

The purpose is not merely to sit and listen. We are being equipped to go out and fulfill what God has assigned to us; and those assignments will not all look the same.

Some are called to ministry within the church. Others will serve God through business, education, medicine, government, agriculture, the arts, technology, their homes, their communities, and countless other areas of society. Wherever God has placed us, there should be evidence of spiritual maturity, wisdom, character, discernment, excellence, service, obedience, and impact.

Ephesians 4 tells us that spiritual leadership is given “for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.”

In other words, we are supposed to be equipped.

So if years are passing and there is no growth, no greater understanding, no maturity, and no evidence that what we are hearing is transforming how we live, perhaps some questions need to be asked:

Am I hearing but not applying?

Am I “ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth”?

Has attending church simply become routine?

Has fellowship become more of a social gathering to me than a place where I expect to be spiritually nourished, challenged and equipped?

If I am genuinely hungry, listening, studying, applying and seeking God, yet I am continually being fed something that produces no depth, then another question deserves consideration:

What am I being fed?

Is the teaching grounded in Scripture? Is there wisdom, understanding and spiritual substance? Or am I repeatedly receiving surface-level teaching, borrowed revelation and words that sound impressive but never equip me to mature?

We should be able to question these things, because the gathering of believers was never intended to produce permanent spectators.

We gather to be strengthened, edified, be equipped, and then we go out and live what we have learned.

If years are passing and nothing is growing, not our character, wisdom, discernment, service, understanding, obedience or effectiveness—then something deserves examination.

Are we merely attending, or are we actually being equipped?
