Watch Over Your Heart

other and destroyed themselves, they rushed in—only to walk straight into defeat.

“…the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood…” — 2 Kings 3:22

What they saw wasn’t real but what they believed was and that belief led them into their downfall.

When Perception Is Not Reality: This moment is not just a historical account, it is a mirror.

Today, people are not always responding to reality, they are responding to what they perceive. Perception is not always neutral. It is shaped by experiences, emotions, assumptions and most importantly by the condition of the heart.

The Heart Behind the Eyes

Scripture gives us another key that unlocks this deeper:

“As he thinks in his heart, so is he…”  Proverbs 23:7

This means what you carry internally doesn’t stay internal. It influences how you interpret everything around you. If the heart is unsettled, you may see threat where there is none. If the heart is wounded, you may hear offense where none was intended. If the heart is hardened, you may assume the worst even in neutral situations.

In other words:

Your heart becomes the lens through which you see the world.

What Happened with the Moabites Let’s go back to that moment.

There was water reflecting the sun but to the Moabites, it looked like blood.

Why? because their expectation aligned with what they saw.

They were already positioned for conflict and their mindset was already anticipating destruction so when something resembled blood, they didn’t question it, they accepted it. They saw what confirmed what they were ready to believe and that misinterpretation cost them.

How This Shows Up Today

This same principle plays out in everyday life.  Someone gives a short response and it is perceived as attitude, a person doesn’t respond quickly and it is interpreted as disrespect.

A neutral situation becomes negative, not because of what happened,

but because of what is already sitting in the heart and over time, this creates: Misunderstandings, unnecessary conflict, broken communication, wrong decisions based on false assumptions

Just like the Moabites, people can walk into situations thinking they understand what they see only to realize too late that they misread it entirely.

The Danger of a Misaligned Heart

The danger is not just seeing incorrectly. It is the acting on what was seen incorrectly because once perception is accepted as truth, it begins to guide decisions and decisions built on distortion lead to outcomes that were never meant to happen. This is how relationships fracture and opportunities are missed.

 Guarding the Heart Matters

This is why the instruction to guard the heart is not casual, it is critical. The heart doesn’t just feel, it filters. It processes, interprets, assigns meaning and if that filter is compromised, everything that passes through it becomes distorted.

Here’s a simple Illustration:

Imagine looking through a tinted glass. If the glass is red, everything appears red. If the glass is dark, everything appears dim.

The world hasn’t changed but your perception of it has.

Now imagine that glass is your heart. What you carry within it, colors everything you see.

Walking in Clarity

So what is the answer? It is not to ignore feelings. It is not to suppress reactions but to be aware of what is shaping them.

Pause and ask:

Am I seeing this clearly? Or am I interpreting this through something I’m carrying? Is this reality or assumption? and above all, to choose a posture rooted in love, not suspicion because love seeks understanding, suspicion assumes the worst.

Final Reflection

The Moabites didn’t fall because of what was actually there.

They fell because of what they believed they saw and that is a powerful reminder: Not everything that looks real is true. So the question becomes:

What lens are you looking through?

And even deeper—

What is in your heart that may be shaping what you see?
